HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Black lung benefits, health care spending and one’s support for President Obama have taken center stage in the congressional campaign to represent West Virginia’s 3rd District.

But independent fact checkers say use of those topics, in some instances, have been distorted, mischaracterized and taken out of context, all the more reason voters should do their homework in deciding between Democratic incumbent Nick Rahall and Republican challenger Evan Jenkins.
The competitive nature of this year’s race means a greater infusion of cash, which equates to more commercials and a greater prevalence of such negativity.
Fact checkers have been most critical of Rahall and his supporters, singling out three commercials with words such as ridiculous, bogus and sleazy.
That’s compared to just measured criticism of ads produced by the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) in support of Jenkins, with the same fact checkers taking no issue with commercials from Jenkins’ actual campaign…
