84 Lumber to close three of its 20 W.Va. stores

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Three West Virginia lumber and building materials stores, including one in Kanawha County, are shutting down.

The three stores, owned by 84 Lumber, a national chain of lumberyards, are located in Belle, Ripley and Mineral Wells.

The company, which bills itself “the nation’s largest privately held supplier of lumber and building materials to professional contractors,” said in a news release that the stores will be “consolidated” into other existing stores.

In Belle, the lumberyard’s three warehouses sat largely vacant on Thursday. One employee drove a forklift and unlocked the lot to allow a Waste Management truck inside.

“This store is closed,” read a banner on the padlocked chain-link gate. “Inventory liquidation sale to be held Friday, Saturday & Sunday,” said another.

A third banner said the store has been relocated to St. Albans, giving an address and phone number, although an employee at that existing store had no knowledge of the Belle store’s closing.

The three stores, employing a total of 18 people, closed on Tuesday morning…
