
University of Charleston flags proudly decorate the campus along North Kanawha Street on Wednesday afternoon, the day it was announced that a settlement involving the now-defunct Mountain State University and its former students will result in the sale of the property to cover the costs. UC has been leasing the property since it took over in 2013.
BECKLEY, W.Va. — University of Charleston officials are moving the Beckley campus to an educational building in Harper Park, UC Regional President Jerry Forster announced Tuesday.
Forster said officials have leased one building on the former New River Community and Technical College campus at the park and have a verbal agreement to lease a second one.
“We are very excited to be able to move forward with our new location,” said Forster. “It will allow us to continue to provide private, high-quality education opportunities to the Beckley community. We are committed to providing needed opportunities for students in the southern part of the state.”
Forster emphasized that health science programs are crucial to provide for residents’ current needs in the region.
UC-Beckley officials had been interested in keeping their current space at the old Mountain State University campus on South Kanawha Street in Beckley, he said, after West Virginia University recently purchased the campus.
