BECKLEY, W.Va. — In May 2017 WVU Tech will close its doors and its students will move to West Virginia University’s Beckley campus. But according to WVU president E. Gordon Gee, WVU isn’t abandoning Montgomery, a regional campus since 1996.
“We still have a significant amount of time to work closely with the community,” Gee said recently. “We’re also taking a look at other options for those facilities that belong to the university and the state.”
Until those options are public, Gee said WVU is going to continue to use its Extension Service, as well as its community development services, to develop programs of value for Montgomery.
“We’ve picked out two or three areas where we want to become instant partners,” Gee said.
When 30 percent of Harpers Ferry’s historic district burned this summer, WVU immediately sent teams from the law, engineering and agriculture schools to begin the rebuild.
“We said ‘we’re going to be your partner; we’re going to try to rebuild this,’ and we’re very much in the process of that,” Gee said.
That effort mirrors WVU programs in Weirton and on Charleston’s West Side.
