WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. — Jim Justice, a newcomer on the statewide political scene, never trailed in the race for the Democratic nomination for governor.
The race was called around 9:45 p.m.
Justice spoke to the crowd of about 500 gathered at his Greenbrier resort, saying he appreciated his opponents in the race.
“I’m humbled, it was a resounding win and this is what I wanted to have happen,” he said. “We can join hands and we’re going to run across the finish line together and people are going to be hard to hold back when you’ve got this kind of momentum.
While Justice said he would not support a presidential candidate who is “not supportive of our state, not supportive of our energy sector and not supportive of our coal miners,” he said he would campaign with down-ballot candidates to help Democrats regain a majority in the state Senate and the House of Delegates.
“I’ll do all I possibly can to help Democrats get control of the Senate and control of the House … because that would make things easier and more manageable,” he said. “But I’m also one that would say what’s wrong with working with Republicans if they have a good idea…
