CLARKSBURG, W.Va. — Local U.S. Fish and Wildlife officials, with assistance from the state Department of Environmental Protection, helped a local resident remove 200 tires from the West Fork River Monday.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife’s Nick Millett and resident Steven Hamrick were loading mud-stained tires onto a trailer Monday on Hamrick’s property along the West Fork just outside of Clarksburg. The tires would later be hauled away for recycling.
Hamrick said he spent a total of about 16 hours removing 200 tires from a quarter-mile stretch of the West Fork near his house.
He first noticed the tires in the river when the water level was lowered last week while officials conducted a mussel survey.
