An ATV rider rides down the Pocahontas Trail, the branch of the Hatfield-McCoy ATV Trail that extends into Mercer County. Bramwell, Bluewell, and other parts of the county have been seeing more visitors and economic growth since the new trail opened.
BLUEFIELD, W.Va. — Trail permit sales for Mercer and McDowell counties are up almost 16 percent according to Hatfield-McCoy Trail System Executive Director Jeff Lusk.
With the closure of the Ivy Branch Trail in Lincoln County and the Little Coal River Trail in Boone County to land sales, trails in Mercer and McDowell counties have seen increased ATV activity.
Even with Ivy Branch and Little Coal River trails closing there are still over 500 miles of trails.
Lusk said the Hatfield-McCoy Trail System is up 7 to 10 percent in permit sales system wide this year.
