GOP nominee seeks debates in WV governor’s race

BECKLEY, W.Va. — Republican gubernatorial nominee Bill Cole wasted no time in calling on his recently-chosen opponent to a series of debates after Democratic nominee Jim Justice won a three-way race Tuesday.

“I thought the sooner the better,” Cole said Wednesday afternoon.

Cole sent out the challenge Wednesday morning, proposing a series of seven debates around the state “focusing on major issues facing West Virginia.”

The media release sent from the Cole campaign listed revitalizing the coal industry, reforming state government, combating the drug epidemic, improving student achievement, the future of higher education, rebuilding infrastructure and developing broadband and capitalizing on natural gas resources as the major issues West Virginia faces.

Cole said it’s important for voters to see both candidates side-by-side.

“It will be hard to differentiate otherwise,” he said.
