BECKLEY, W.Va. — Over 20 acres of the New River Gorge area has burned, officials said. The fire, which is about 20 percent contained, has destroyed parts of the Grandview area, according to a press release from the National Park Service.
The fire was discovered around 10 a.m. on Wednesday. NPS officials say the fire is burning in steep, rugged terrain, which is making it difficult to fight the fire.
Parts of the Turkey Spur Overlook have been destroyed, including the new stairs and boardwalk, the press release said.
Grandview Park is still open, but Turkey Spur Road, Turkey Spur Overlook and parts of the Grandview Rim Trail are closed.
Around 40 firefighters are working to contain the fire…
