Fayette Schools will cut 18 staff positions

BECKLEY, W.Va. — Fayette County Schools will eliminate professional jobs and service personnel in an effort to match funding the state allows for such positions.

Fayette Superintendent Terry George said the county will reduce staff by 9.5 professional positions and 8.5 service jobs next school year. Some of these positions are part-time.

Positions set to be eliminated will end June 30, 2016.

West Virginia uses student population to determine the amount of funding — or state aid formula — each district will receive. The number of professional and personnel positions that fall outside that number must be paid for in other ways, including the county’s excess levy.

The school district’s general fund for fiscal year 2016 is $61.4 million, which is down at least $7 million from 2015…
