‘It definitely hasn’t sunk in yet’ for WVU’s Thrasher

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Ginny Thrasher can’t help herself.

The West Virginia sophomore shooter loves cradling and staring at the Olympic gold medal she captured in Saturday’s women’s 10-meter air rifle competition.

“It definitely hasn’t sunk in yet,” Thrasher said Sunday in a conference call with reporters.

“For me, holding that medal in my hands and looking at it and realizing it’s still real is something I have to do every few minutes.”

The 19-year-old from Springfield, Va., is still trying to regain her bearings in light of a dizzying initial 24 hours after becoming the first athlete to win gold at the Rio de Janeiro Games.
