Common Core repeal not a sure thing in Senate

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — As the Senate Education Committee is set to discuss the repeal of Common Core standards, the Republican lawmaker tasked with counting votes said the bill is not likely to succeed.

“I do not believe that there is a strong desire in our caucus or the other caucus to push this issue,” Sen. Daniel Hall, R-Wyoming, who serves as Majority Whip, told the Daily Mail on Sunday.

Hall said he’s heard from school superintendents within his district who do not want to repeal the standards.

“I’m going to defer to the experts on that,” he said.

When asked whether or not he supports the repeal bill, Hall said, “I’m not in favor of it, not in a million years.”

Hall’s statement adds intrigue to a subject that has been deemed a high priority for several Republican lawmakers, including Sen. Donna Boley, R-Pleasants. Boley introduced a bill calling for the repeal of Common Core standards earlier this session but did not press the issue as the House of Delegates worked to send a similar bill through its chamber.

As of Sunday evening, Senate Majority Leader Mitch Carmichael, R-Jackson, said there has been no formal poll within the chamber’s Republican caucus on the issue yet but that will likely happen on Monday…
