BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. — Shoppers in Bridgeport will pay 7 percent in sales taxes on their purchases starting July 1, thanks to action taken Monday night by Bridgeport City Council.
City council passed the final reading of an ordinance to impose a 1 percent sales tax to finance the construction, operation and maintenance of a proposed indoor recreation facility.
Councilman Lowell J. “L.J.” Maxey, who cast the sole dissenting vote, renewed his previous motion to postpone enacting the tax until July 1, 2017.
“I don’t think, until we get an idea of what the community wants, that we should impose this tax,” Maxey said during the regular council meeting at Bridgeport City Hall.
