Bluefield Horse Show back for 47th season

BLUEFIELD, Va. — The warmth of a summer evening in the two Virginias surrounded spectators who were seated in the stands of a tree-shaded area of the Lotito Park show ring as the Bluefield Shrine Club opened the gates for the 47th installment of the Bluefield Horse Show.

The Bluefield Shrine Club color guard — Rob Catron, Ernie Gillespie, Jerry Belcher and Ben Gay — posted colors for the official opening of the show and Mercer County Commissioner Gene Buckner offered the invocation. Commission President Mike Vinciguerra and Commissioner Greg Puckett as well as Mayor Donald Harris of Bluefield, Va., and Mayor Tom Cole of Bluefield participated in the opening ceremony.

Cole remarked about the unique relationship between the two Bluefields, with a park that is located in Bluefield, Va., but owned by Bluefield, W.Va. He noted that the horse show, “creates great opportunities for our communities to work together.”

Cole praised the efforts of the Shriners with respect to service to child burn victims and handicapped children. “I appreciate all you do for children,” Cole said. “Have a great weekend.”

Chet Roberts, potentate of the Bluefield Shrine Club welcomed the competitors and spectators as well. “Hats off to you,” Roberts said. “The real winners are the children of southern West Virginia…
