BLUEFIELD, W.Va. — Construction began Thursday on a new parking area for ATV trailers in downtown Bluefield. The project is part of a larger effort by city officials to lure riders of the Hatfield-McCoy Trail system into the downtown area.

“The city of Bluefield is the southern gateway to the Hatfield-McCoy Trail,” Jim Spencer, community and economic development coordinator for Bluefield, said. “And with the folks coming in to enjoy the Hatfield-McCoy Trail a lot of them are pulling trailers and they need parking. This allows our merchants to capitalize on these folks that are coming through.”

The gravel parking area is being created for ATV trailers at the site of the former Colonial Theater in the downtown. Spencer said ATV welcome signs are being created that will be used to help direct the ATV traffic to the new downtown parking area.

“Josh (Cline) and I have been working on looking at a welcome sign, and embracing that we are the southern gateway,” Spencer said. “We want to have something available for those folks. The key is to get them to stop and not just go through the city. But they can’t stop if they don’t have parking.”

Cline said the new ATV parking area should be completed in a couple of days.

“We got started this morning, and will finish off probably next week or later this weekend,” Cline said. “The goal is to go down and put four inches in the ground, and put a gravel parking lot in so they would have a space to pull in and out. We are starting to look at signage, and hope to have clear signage of where folks can park.”

Cline said the plan is to create space where 10 to 15 ATV trailers can be parked…
