WVU’s arrival in Beckley worries nearby colleges

BLUEFIELD, W.Va. — With a decision expected next week on disputed program course offerings planned at the new West Virginia University Institute of Technology campus in Beckley, area lawmakers say they are prepared to fight — if necessary — to protect Concord University and Bluefield State College.

When WVU acquired the former Mountain State University campus in Beckley earlier this year at a cost of $8 million, a chain of events were set into motion that led to high hopes of the new WVU Tech campus offering advanced graduate degrees that are not currently available at Bluefield State and Concord for southern West Virginia students. But serious concerns have also developed in recent weeks about a duplication of programs and course offerings by WVU-Tech that are already provided by Bluefield State College and Concord University in both Raleigh and Mercer counties.

Questions also have been raised by area officials over how WVU-Tech will have 3,000 students enrolled in Beckley by 2017, and 5,000 by 2020, without drawing from the existing pool of students already served by Concord University and Bluefield State College…
