WVU to face Virginia Tech in 2017 season opener

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Another trip to FedExField in the Washington suburb of Landover, Md., is in the offing for the West Virginia University football team.

The Mountaineers will open the 2017 season against Virginia Tech, playing on Saturday, Sept. 2, officials announced Tuesday. It was added after the schools previously announced non-conference home dates in 2021 and 2022.

It will be WVU’s third trip to Fed ExField, following the 2012 game against James Madison and the upcoming game against Brigham Young scheduled for Sept. 24, 2016. It will be Virginia Tech’s fourth appearance at FedExField since 2004.

It will also be the first game between the longtime border rivals since 2005, when the Hokies left the Big East to join the Atlantic Coast Conference. The WVU-Virginia Tech series dates back to 1912, with the Mountaineers holding a 28-22-1 lead in the rivalry.
