Assembly lines formed at Southridge Church to package 60,000 meals for shipment to Nicaragua.
CHARLESTON, W.Va. — This isn’t your usual church potluck.
On Sunday, Sept. 14, volunteers from Southridge Church and Elk River Church of the Nazarene prepared more than 60,000 meals.
The food is being shipped nearly 2,000 miles to Nicaragua, where they will feed thousands of families.
Assembly lines formed outside Southridge Church as church members prepared food packages that include a rice-soy casserole fortified with 21 essential vitamins and minerals, six dehydrated vegetables and chicken flavoring. Each package contains six servings and is prepared by adding one bag to six cups of water and boiling for 20 minutes.
The volunteers worked in two shifts, packing the food in bags and packing the bags into boxes, before loading those boxes into a truck.
The truck transported the meals to the Nicaragua Christian Education Foundation’s warehouse in Highland, Ill. From there, the boxes are loaded into shipping containers and sent overseas.
Southridge Church raised about $18,000 for the project. Each meal costs 30 cents, which covers both food and shipping costs…
