PRINCETON, W.Va. — Volunteers are now 10 days into a 40-day campaign to clean up Mercer County.

According to county commissioner Greg Puckett, a cleanup of a dumpsite on Ada Road amassed 11,000 tires.

“We’ve had a tremendous response,” Puckett said. “We keep finding massive dumpsites. The good news is we’re finding names and addresses and we’re looking to prosecute.”

According to Puckett, offenders face a minimum of $2,500 in fines and a maximum of up to $25,000 in fines. “We’ve got these people that tear down properties and leave residuals. We’re awaiting final recommendations from the West Virginia University School of Law on a dilapidated building ordinance.”

Puckett said that free day at the Mercer County landfill will be every Wednesday in April…
