USS West Virginia survivor speaks in Morgantown

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — A sailor who survived the bombing of the USS West Virginia during the Pearl Harbor attack 74 years ago told students at Morgantown High School that they can enjoy their youth — and get ready for serious adulthood — at the same time.

“You’re the captain of your own ship,” Richard Cunningham said, Monday, Nov. 9.

Cunningham, 92, was a guest of honor at the school’s Veteran’s Day observances.

He ended up rescuing wounded sailors on the morning of Dec. 7, 1941.
