US energy agency sees further declines for coal

BECKLEY, W.Va. — With the increased use of renewable energies and natural gas, the domestic coal industry will continue to struggle for many years to come.

The dire outlook comes from the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s Annual Energy Outlook 2016. The outlook continues that even if the U.S. Supreme Court deems the Clean Power Plan unconstitutional, coal usage will continue to drop.

In 2015, natural gas and renewables made up the bulk of domestic energy produced.

By implementing the CPP, coal-fired generation will decrease by 32 percent between 2016 and 2040…
