CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The West Virginia Board of Education voted unanimously March 23 to appoint Steven Paine as the state’s next Superintendent of Schools.

Steven Paine is the West VIrginia’s next Superintendent of Schools

Paine will begin serving Monday, March 27 at a salary of $230,000 per year, the same as his predecessor, Michael Martirano, whose last day in the position will be March 24.

Martirano announced in September he would resign from the position June 30 in order to move closer to his family in Maryland. Martirano has been state superintendent since 2014.

Paine had previously served as state superintendent from 2005-2011 and has been the interim superintendent of Wayne County Schools.

Paine was selected over two other finalists, Kathy D’Antoni and Blaine Hess. Both D’Antoni and Hess have extensive experience in the West Virginia education system.

“Dr. Paine’s past experiences and knowledge of West Virginia’s educational landscape make him the ideal candidate to serve as Superintendent of Schools,” WVBE President Tom Campbell said in a news release. “He is a proven leader who is committed to raising the bar for everyone involved in education, and the State Board is confident in his ability to lead during this challenging time.”

Paine served as state superintendent from 2005-2011 and he currently is the interim superintendent of Wayne County Schools. He previously served as superintendent of Morgan County Schools and joined the WVDE in 2003 as the deputy state superintendent of schools. He has been a principal, assistant principal, teacher and curriculum director in the Upshur and Harrison county school systems. He has a degree in education, a master’s degree in educational administration and a doctorate in educational leadership studies. He also has received the Milken Family Foundation National Educator Award.

“I am humbled to be appointed as the Superintendent of Schools and once again serve the students throughout West Virginia,” Paine said. “I am committed to ensuring that our education system provides all children the opportunity for a world-class education and I look forward to working closely with the State Board, Gov. (Jim) Justice, our lawmakers and educators to prepare the students of the Mountain State to be successful in life.”
