CHARLESTON, W.Va. — During a legislative hearing Tuesday, one state senator said she wants to advance a bill that will place a two-year moratorium on Common Core-aligned assessments and have a committee explore the possibility of completely repealing the controversial standards.

Sen. Donna Boley, R-Pleasants, one of the most vocal critics of Common Core in West Virginia, has for two years sponsored legislation that condemns the standards. Her bills, introduced in both 2013 and 2014 sessions, have never made it through committee hearings.

Boley’s push to repeal the standards has been controversial, and while she claims to have the support of fellow Republicans, Democrats are wary of what repercussions that move could bring. The state school board and some teachers also have joined the conversation and are urging legislators to give the standards time.

Regardless of what action is taken, Boley is urging fellow lawmakers to educate themselves.

“Let’s study it,” Boley said. “Let’s get people in here on both sides.”

While Common Core standards were adopted by the state school board in 2010 — after being retooled and renamed the Next Generation Content Standards — this is the first year they have been in effect in every classroom across the state.
