Sheriff says W.Va. shooter should not have had gun

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The shooter in a four-person murder rampage was prohibited from having a firearm, Monongalia County Sheriff Al Kisner said Tuesday, Dec. 2.

Jody Hunt was the suspected gunman in a three-site shooting spree in the Morgantown area on Monday, Dec. 1.

Four people were killed — Doug Brady, owner of Doug’s Towing; Sharon Kay Berkshire, 37, of Westover; and Michael David Frum, 28, of Maidsville, who were killed at a residence off Sunset Beach Road in Cheat Lake; and Jody Taylor, shot at a residence off Sweet Pea Lane.

Police spent most of the day searching for Hunt, 39, of Westover. At about 7:45 p.m., police found Hunt in his pickup truck with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Investigators aren’t sure how Hunt obtained the firearm, Kisner said. He could have purchased it from a friend or provided false information to a dealer.
