With revenues down, WV Lottery considers options

CLARKSBURG, W.Va. — State lottery revenues have been decreasing steadily over the last five years, with an annual loss of about $250 million, according to information provided by the West Virginia Lottery.

And the opening of a horse track/casino in National Harbor, Maryland, is expected to have an even deeper impact on West Virginia Lottery sales beginning in December.

In the meantime, lottery officials are discussing options to make lottery games more accessible through smartphone capability and other means.

In 2006, West Virginia Lottery sales totaled $1.538 billion, compared to $1.175 billion in 2015. The lottery transferred $508.3 million to state coffers in fiscal year 2015, the last year for which figures are available…
