Raleigh County graduation falls short due to ‘errors’

BECKLEY, W.Va. — Shady Spring High School principal Deanna Massey took responsibility for the school’s abbreviated graduation ceremony that left some parents upset that the students weren’t recognized properly for their academic achievement.

Massey, who is serving in her first year as principal of SSHS, said she “takes ownership” of the shortened commencement ceremony.

“The first error was that our main guest speaker, Mr. (Larry) Ford, did not speak,” Massey said.

Ford, who serves on the Raleigh County Board of Education and is an alumnus of SSHS, was in attendance to give a speech for the graduating class of 2016.

Massey stated that she believed there was a miscommunication between her and Ford when it came time for him to speak at the ceremony.
