No Marshall-WVU men’s basketball next season

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Marshall University’s annual men’s basketball clash with West Virginia University is off the schedule for now.

Marshall sources said Wednesday the Capital Classic game won’t be played in the 2016-17 season. The schools could have discussions at a later date about renewing the series between the state’s two NCAA Division I basketball programs

Sen. Mike Woelfel (D-Cabell) plans to introduce a bill requiring the teams to meet once each season if school officials can’t first reach an agreement. Woelfel is a graduate of Marshall and the WVU College of Law.

Woelfel’s proposal says the venue, date and all other pertinent details of the game would be jointly determined by the schools.

WVU defeated Marshall on Dec. 17, 86-68, for its fifth straight win in the rivalry. The Mountaineers won the last five meetings and nine of the last 10 to hold a 33-11 series lead. The games have consistently drawn more 10,000 spectators in the Charleston Civic Center…
