New school chief reveals two-high school plan for Fayette County

HICO, W.Va. — Around 250 residents gathered in the Midland Trail High School auditorium Thursday to hear Fayette Superintendent Terry George’s facility realignment plan that will trim the school district’s 18 schools down to 11.

He proposed a two high school model.

George said, if approved by the State Board of Education, phase one will be to construct one new high school on the plateau to combine current Oak Hill, Midland Trail, Fayetteville and Meadow Bridge high schools.

This new school is expected to cost between $52 million and $58 million, compared to the $74 million it would cost to repair each individual school. To replace each high school would cost a total of $104 million.

Once the large school is built, George said the central office will be willing to assist any Meadow Bridge High students who wish to attend Summers County or Greenbrier West high schools for a shorter commute.

Valley High School will remain. He noted that an analysis of the Valley district has revealed that their school facilities will be able to maintain for the next 20 to 25 years.
