New Harrison County middle school to open

SHINNSTON, W.Va. — Last minute preparations are being made to prepare the new Lincoln Middle School for the influx of students for the first time on Thursday.

Harrison County students were back in the classroom Monday, but LMS students were given until Thursday to start classes at their new school in Shinnston. This gave the teachers and staff time to get classrooms ready.

Principal Lori Scott said there is still plenty of unpacking to do and computer services need completed.

“Obviously the main goal is to be ready to educate the kids. We hope to have the computers (online) by Thursday,” she said.

Other odds and ends include bookcases and blinds that must be installed, but she is confident that the staff will be ready to welcome the 420 students.

“Some of the major advantages of the new school are the enhanced security measures. There is shatterproof glass on the first floor and a security foyer, which they call a mantrap,” Scott said.

The mantrap allows visitors into a small room at the entrance of the school, but does not permit them into the main building until a staff member unlocks the second security door.

“We have a state-of-the-art facility with iPad labs, Apple computers and a new projection system. There is also a large group instruction room,” she said.

The school, which is connected to Lincoln High School by a corridor and vestibule, will share a cafeteria and auditorium…
