Morgantown bowler vies for PBA championship

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — When pro bowler Brian Robinson threw his fifth strike in a row at Suburban Lanes recently, Larry Lichstein set them up and knocked them down.

“Right there,” Lichstein said.

“That’s what I’m talking about. This kid’s one tournament away from greatness. If I didn’t think that, I wouldn’t be coaching him.”

Lichstein has been there himself.

He was the Pro Bowlers Association (PBA) Rookie of the Year in 1970, sharing the spotlight on the lanes with luminaries such as Earl Anthony and Johnny Petraglia.

Later, he became even more respected in the sport as the PBA’s director of player services.

Lichstein came to work for Suburban Lanes last spring and runs the pro shop.

Robinson, a PBA member who has rolled a 300 (a perfect, 12-strike game) in pro competition, became his pupil…
