Monongalia deputies without cams in shooting

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The Monongalia County Sheriff’s deputies involved in a fatal shooting on Charles Avenue last week weren’t wearing body cameras.

“The reason they weren’t wearing body cameras is because the ones had originally purchased, we found out after they were purchased that they are virtually useless in low light or darkness,” Sheriff Al Kisner said, adding that the cameras also had a very short battery life.

Kisner said the department applied for a $39,000 grant to buy better cameras but that request was denied.

On Thursday, Nov. 5, 10 deputies — seven in uniform and three in plain clothes — went to 1043 Charles Ave. to serve an arrest warrant for an armed robbery that occurred that day.

After gaining entry, deputies encountered 48-year-old David Michael Romanoski. Police said he was armed with a shotgun and a deputy fired…
