Monongalia County mine putting 262 back to work

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Monongalia County Coal Co.’s Monongalia County Mine is putting 262 hourly workers back to work, company parent Murray Energy Corp. announced Thursday afternoon, June 18.

The recall puts the total employment at about 440, the company said, with the remainder being salaried employees. The staffing will allow the mine, previously called Blacksville 2, to operate on a reduced schedule.

The Monongalia County Mine had been idled since March 31. On May 22, Murray announced that it would eliminate jobs or lay off employees at its five area mines, along with mines in Ohio and Illinois. That included the Monongalia County Mine, where an unspecified number of its 589 employees would be laid off for an indefinite period effective July 21.
