Mingo County stunned by Truman Chafin’s defeat

WILLIAMSON, W.Va. — A huge upset in the WV State Senate race has stunned the residents of Mingo County, as veteran incumbent Senator H. Truman Chafin was narrowly defeated by a 51 to 49 percent margin (11,561 to 11,172) to Republican Mark Maynard, a newcomer to the political arena from Wayne County.

“Sometimes what we think is best for us is not the path we will be taking,” stated Chafin, as he spoke to the Williamson Daily News from his attorney’s office on 2nd Avenue. “You win some and you lose some. Who knows – this may open other doors that would have stayed shut had it not been for this loss…only time will tell.”

Retaining his seat as the 20th District House of Delegate is Justin Marcum, who defeated Republican challenger Russell Deskins by a total of 71 to 29 percent (2,811 to 1,168).
