Marshall’s Herd ready to play in Boca Raton

BOCA RATON, Fla. — With the Boca Raton Bowl being one of the earlier contests in the football bowl season, it has only been 17 days since Marshall University was on the field for its Conference USA championship win over Louisiana Tech.

For the players and coaches, though, it has felt like an eternity.

Earlier this week at practice, Marshall running backs coach Chris Barclay just looked up to the sky as he spoke for the sentiment of the team.

“We’re just ready to play this game,” Barclay said. “It feels like we’ve been practicing forever.”

After a two-week wait for both teams, Marshall (12-1) and Northern Illinois (11-2) line up to play in the inaugural Boca Raton Bowl at 6 p.m. Tuesday in FAU Stadium.

Marshall and Northern Illinois bring some things to the table that few bowl games can.

First, both teams are conference champions — Marshall claiming its first C-USA football crown and Northern Illinois winning its third Mid-American Conference title in four years.

Both teams come in with a knack for winning games over the last two seasons with a combined record of 45-9…
