HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Marshall University’s chief of staff is leaving the university to climb the ranks of West Virginia’s higher education system.

Matt Turner will begin a job as the executive vice chancellor for administration with the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission on Aug. 1, according to a press release from the commission on Monday.

In his new post, Turner will be “responsible for carrying out policy directives for both systems, including facilitating intergovernmental relations and overseeing state-level student financial aid programs, the West Virginia Network and the statewide human resources and classification system, according to the release.

“We’re looking forward to the energy and experience Matt will bring with him,” Paul Hill, the Commission’s Chancellor, said in the release. “As our state works to get more students through — and not just to — college, we need high-caliber, forward-looking leadership like Matt’s to help us reach that goal.”

Turner is in England this week visiting the family of his wife, Roxy, but he issued a statement saying he was eager to face his next professional challenge.

“Ahead of me — I’m excited to help HEPC and the CTCs fulfill their mission of getting more West Virginians to not just enroll but successfully complete education after high school and to advance the state’s research and development,” Turner said.

Dave Wellman, Marshall’s director of communication, said finding a replacement for Turner will be challenging.
