Huntington mayor unveils $100M riverfront project

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — A 260-slip marina, boat repair and retail shop, boardwalk with shopping, and eventually even condominiums are part of a three-phase, $100 million investment for Harris Riverfront Park announced by Huntington Mayor Steve Williams.

Williams unveiled the plan as part of his state of the city address Tuesday afternoon.

It’s a public/private venture with perhaps the unlikeliest of bedfellows in Huntington Marine Services, a company that had been embroiled in a legal battle with the city for the better part of two decades over the right to build a barge mooring facility in Westmoreland.

The lawsuit was settled about a year ago, and Williams said city officials and the principals of Huntington Marine have been working on the plan since settlement talks began.

“It’s exciting. We’ve been sitting on that (announcement) for some time, and we’re still developing (the project),” Williams told the media after his address. “When we met about the settlement discussions, I was trying any way from Sunday around a barge facility. In any negotiation, you have to find a sweet spot, and they heard me complaining about the problems we were having on the riverfront. Our conversations started to shift…
