Huntington Mall losing Elder-Beerman anchor store

BARBOURSVILLE, W.Va. — One of the Huntington Mall’s anchor stores will close on Jan. 31, 2016.

The Bon-Ton Stores Inc., parent company of Elder-Beerman, announced Wednesday its store in the Huntington Mall is one of three locations that will not have its current lease renewed.

“It’s unfortunate, it really is,” said Joe Bell, director of corporate communications for Cafaro, the company that owns the Huntington Mall. “We have actually seen this type of thing a lot; national chains want to cut their costs so they are shedding stores. We hate to see it go, but sadly it is a fact of life in corporate America.”

Other Elder-Beerman stores are closing in Lima, Ohio, and Syracuse, New York, according to the news release.

The 75,600-square-foot store in Barboursville opened in 1981, the same year as the mall, as Stone and Thomas department store. Bon-Ton acquired the leasehold interests of the store at the Huntington Mall as part of its Elder-Beerman acquisition in 2003.

The 58 employees at the Huntington Mall Elder-Beerman will be offered the opportunity to interview for available positions at other stores…
