Half million raised for McDowell teacher village

WELCH, W.Va. A fundraising effort for the new Teacher Village in McDowell County has raised more than a half of a million dollars to go towards the project.

Reconnecting McDowell is working on the Teacher Village project to help keep teachers in the area.

 “They actual have the architectural design in rough draft,” McDowell County School Superintendent Nelson Spencer said.  

Upon completion, the Teacher Village will have 30 units available for rent.

The property for the project is located at the old Best Furniture and Katzen building location in Welch.

“They had some preliminary plans drawn up,” David Williams, president of the board of education, said. “There is no construction started yet that we’ve seen. They’ve not started demolishing the old building.”

Williams said the goal of the Teacher Village is to attract qualified teachers and keep them in McDowell County.
