Fire damages two Fairmont buildings

FAIRMONT, W.Va. — Crews responded to the scene of a structure fire that damaged two buildings Sunday on Fairmont’s East Side.

The fire, which took place at Mike Heston Serenity and Fellowship House located at the corner of Guffey and Columbia streets across from Ford Funeral Home, was initially called in at 5:53 p.m. when neighbors noticed smoke coming from the home.

“I glanced up and saw smoke coming out of the heater and the motion-censor light outside,” Derangle Baldie, who witnessed the event and alerted neighbors to call the police, said. “I knocked on the (back) door and I didn’t get a response. So I ran around front and saw that the people had already come out because they smelled the smoke and thought it was a fire drill.
