Experts see uncertain outlook for W.Va. economy

BECKLEY, W.Va. — Citing “unusually large declines” in a majority of indicators, experts at the WVU Bureau of Business and Economic Research said Thursday that the outlook for the state’s economy is “relatively uncertain.”

“Overall, we believe the state’s economy will grow at a slow pace in the late summer into early fall, but conditions warrant close monitoring of the index,” said BBER director John Deskins.

The state’s business performance had a “solid increase” in January and registered a 0.3 percent decline in March, the BBER report said. However, the Mountain State Business Index “notched a 0.3 percent annualized increase in March compared to six months ago,” the report said.

“This represents the smallest such gain in a year and points to possible slow increases in activity over the course of the next quarter or two…
