CHARLESTON, W.Va. — U.S. District Court Judge John Copenhaver handed down a sentence of three years’ probation to former Williamson mayor and Bank of Mingo branch manager, A. Darrin McCormick, on a single charge of lying to federal officials about his knowledge of a widespread workers’ compensation scheme.
McCormick will also pay a $5,000 fine.
McCormick, 51 years of age, had been off work on paid administrative leave from the bank for several months during the investigation that led him being charged in an information, which is similar to an indictment, in May of this year. He pleaded guilty to the charge of making false statements to officials.
Federal sentencing advisory guidelines called for up to 6 months in prison but Judge Copenhaver said he felt the “felony on his record was punishment enough.”
McCormick is said to have lied to agents for the FBI and IRS when asked in February of 2013 if he was privy to any information about multiple cash withdrawals from the Williamson branch of the Bank of Mingo by owners/representatives of Aracoma Contracting.
