Coal industry, backers hail Clean Power Plan delay

CLARKSBURG, W.Va. — West Virginia’s coal industry and its supporters applauded the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision delaying implementation of President Barack Obama’s climate change plan until all legal challenges are resolved.

State environmentalists, meanwhile, expressed disappointment with the high court’s ruling, but remain optimistic that the president’s Clean Power Plan eventually will survive all challenges and be put into effect.

The justices voted 5-4 Tuesday evening to issue the stay while 27 states and Murray Energy challenge the plan in the U.S. Court of Appeals.

“It’s a bright light, and hopefully there will be a light at the end of the tunnel,” said Bill Raney, president of the West Virginia Coal Association.
