WVU Tech supports LGBTQ policy

BECKLEY, W.Va. — West Virginia University-Institute of Technology on Tuesday endorsed a move by Beckley Mayor Rob Rappold to codify class protection of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender residents and those who are questioning their sexual identity (LGBTQ).

Rappold said during a Common Council workshop Monday evening that the Human Rights Commission must petition Council to add LGBTQ as a protected class in the existing city code. The current code, in keeping with federal law, makes it illegal to discriminate in housing and employment based on sex, race and religion.

Council may vote to add LGBTQ as a protected class, although no federal or state code currently requires it.
