CHARLESTON, W.Va. — June’s widespread flooding event has wrecked West Virginia roads to the tune of $55 million, Secretary of Transportation Paul Mattox told a legislative committee Sunday.
Most damage was centered in three counties:
• Clay, $12.8 million
• Kanawha, $15.8 million
• Greenbrier, $7 million
Mattox said the repairs in Greenbrier County (District 9) are about 80 percent complete, with paving scheduled in the next four to six weeks that will return roads to their pre-flood state.
However, he said, in Kanawha and Clay counties (District 1), repairs are only at 40 percent. Employees had to consult Google Earth to determine where the road had been in one area, Mattox said.
