Kanawha still to ask FEMA for portable classrooms

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Kanawha County public schools officials say they still plan to request that the Federal Emergency Management Agency fund portable classrooms to house Clendenin Elementary and Herbert Hoover High students, whose schools were wrecked in the late-June floods that ravaged several West Virginia counties.

Charles Wilson, Kanawha County Schools’ executive director of facilities planning, said FEMA asked school system officials last month to consider alternatives to installing portable classrooms because of the projected expense for placing them on the campuses of Bridge Elementary and Elkview Middle, the two schools that Clendenin Elementary and Hoover students are currently attending.

Hoover students attend Elkview Middle in the afternoon while the middle-schoolers attend in the morning. Clendenin and Bridge elementary students are doubling up inside Bridge on the same schedule.
