Heath named new editor of The Journal

The Journal

MARTINSBURG, W.Va.  — Mary Ann Heath brings 13 years of daily newspaper experience to her new role as editor of The Journal. She was most recently the news editor of The Mining Journal in Marquette, Michigan.

“I’m interested in the opportunity,” Heath said of taking over as editor of The Journal. “I visited the area and like it. People seem nice. There’s a lot of growth, which is a good thing, but it’s still a small town.”

Monday was her first day.

She wants to get to know the staff and community first before making any changes, but she said there probably will be some changes. She looks forward to learning the new culture of West Virginia.

“Newspapers are part of the community — members of the community,” Heath said. “I look forward to meeting people in the community. I like to be involved. My family will be involved. The more involved I am, the better it is for me.”

Her husband, Matthew, is pursuing a degree in computer science, with a concentration in cyber security, at the University of Maryland. They are the parents of Thomas, 5, who will be starting kindergarten this year, and Jack, 3.

She is originally from Marquette, which is in far northern Michigan.

Craig Bartoldson, The Journal publisher, said he is glad to have Heath at The Journal.

“She has proven herself on daily newspapers,” he said. “We’re looking forward to her new ideas and the enthusiasm she brings to the news room.”
