Fire destroys small businesses in town of Clay

The former IGA grocery store on Main Street in Clay was destroyed by fire early Wednesday.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A building housing at least two small businesses on Main Street in Clay was destroyed by fire Wednesday morning.

The fire at the former IGA grocery store in the 200 block of Main Street was reported around 7 a.m., according to a Clay County dispatcher.

Clay Volunteer Fire Department Chief Mike Scott said the fire was under control Wednesday afternoon but that the building was a total loss.

He said the building contained M&M Thrift Shop on the first floor and a sign company in the basement.

The building had also once held other small businesses.

The basement had been previously damaged by flooding…
