Capito ‘encouraged’ after meeting with Trump

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Sen. Shelley Moore Capito gave a positive assessment of her meeting Thursday with Donald Trump, but would not explicitly say she supports the man who is virtually assured of being her party’s nominee for president.

Capito, R-W.Va., took a stance largely similar to U.S. House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., who also met with Trump Thursday: a pledge to work with the nominee, but not an endorsement of his candidacy.

“We had a constructive and wide-ranging conversation,” Capito said, in an emailed statement after her meeting. “Many in my state and across the country are concerned about the direction of the country — and rightly so. Following today’s meeting, I am encouraged that we can unite the party and work together to defeat anyone who promises to finish what President Obama started.”

Capito, a counsel to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., met with Trump and other Republican Senate leaders at the offices of the National Republican Senatorial Committee. She did not mention Trump by name in her statement, and declined interview requests…
