SUMMERSVILLE, W.Va. – On a September day in 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson stood before a crowd of people and said the dam here is a sign of West Virginia’s destiny.

“We come here today to consummate an act of faith in the future of the great State of West Virginia,” he said.

The dam, part of the Kanawha River Basin’s three-reservoir system, he predicted, will prevent flooding, create a recreational center attracting millions of visitors and bring prosperity to the region.
