Herald-Dispatch seeking metro editor, sports copy editor, reporter

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — The Herald-Dispatch, a locally owned daily newspaper in Huntington, W.Va., a city of about 50,000, is seeking to fill three positions.

Metro editor — The Herald-Dispatch is seeking a strong leader to guide the organization’s local news coverage. The position requires strong editing skills, both on the front end of reporting and after a story is turned in, an aggressive attitude toward hard news and enterprise, and the ability to work collaboratively with reporters and other editors to provide the best local news report possible. A bachelor’s degree in journalism or commensurate experience is required, and candidates should have a minimum of seven years of journalism experience, including at least two years in a supervisory capacity. Experienced sports copy editor wanted

The Herald-Dispatch is seeking a motivated journalist with sports experience for a full-time position as a sports copy editor. The ideal candidate should have at least three years of experience in news design, a firm grasp of AP style and grammar, and a knowledge of sports. The candidate also should be comfortable with Adobe software such as InDesign and have a degree in journalism or equivalent work experience. The evening position entails working closely with the sports and news editors to design and lay out the daily sports section as well as any special sports publications throughout the year. The successful candidate will have proven capabilities and be equally adept at weaving compelling feature stories and people profiles and producing thorough hard news stories that answer all of readers’ questions. The position has an emphasis on health and social services coverage, as well as general assignment. A bachelor’s degree in journalism is required and a minimum of three to five years of experience is preferred.
